Facilitation – the most required business skill of the early 21st
century?
What is it about meetings that seem to be interminable? Wouldn’t you
rather be doing something useful rather than watching the agenda being pulped?
When you’re involved in a meeting that’s meandering along, how do you feel?
Can’t you just hear the clock ticking?
Enter the facilitator (like enter the dragon, but less dramatic
and certainly less painful). Here is the saviour of wasted time! Here is the
bringer of focus. Here at last is the person who provides the method and means
to deliver positive outcomes and achievement of meeting objectives. All in the
allocated time!
So what is good facilitation? How do you know when a meeting has
been well facilitated?
Have you ever been to a meeting where there were diverse and
diverging opinions with the distinct possibility of conflict and yet everything
ran smoothly? Could you put your finger on what it was that enabled success?
Did you spot the person subtly guiding the meeting along with the skill and
confident touch of a Venetian gondolier?
Good facilitation can make all the difference between a
well-executed, robust outcome and a solution that is built on shifting sands.
Real Performance Plus provides 1 and 2-day courses to provide all
the basic skills required to fully enable people to become effective
facilitators.
Goal
Setting
The reason most
people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever
seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where
they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the
adventure with them.

It a sobering fact
that many of our goals often fall at the first hurdle. Ask yourself how many of
your New Year resolutions have come to
fruition?
So how can you
maximise the odds of reaching your goals. Perhaps the first step should be to
simply put aside some time to decide what direction you want your life to take.
Goal setting is
quite simply an organized personal planning process. It is a dependable and
effective method for identifying what you want to achieve in your personal life
and your professional career in the long or short term. Goal setting will keep
you focused on your chosen direction.
Goal setting
will help you precisely identify the distractions that serve as barriers on
your road to success. Perhaps one of the most immediate effects of goal setting
is the fulfilment you feel when you set a goal, stick to your plan, and achieve
it.
Once you start
setting and meeting your goals, you will soon notice an improvement in your
confidence, which will have a positive impact on every area of your life. In
working to achieve your goals, you will develop a better understanding of your
strengths and developing a stronger sense of accomplishment, one that grows
with every goal you achieve.
To effectively
set goals, you must first understand that the process essentially takes place on
a variety of levels. Next time we will look at Outcome, Performance and Process
goals.
